Unique Mother’s Day Gifts For Mom
Ideas for Mothers Day presents are sometimes hard to come by. We want to honor our Mothers on her special day, but do we send just another bouquet of flowers? Don’t get me wrong, most Moms love to get flowers! But if you’re looking for a more creative or fun way to honor Mom, then you’ve come to the right place.
My first recommendation is to brainstorm ideas for Mother’s Day. What I’d like for you to ask yourself is what is HER love language? If you don’t know what I mean by that, I would recommend reading Gary Chapman’s "The Five Love Languages" (not only for your Mom, but also to discover what is YOUR love language, and that of the people around you - your spouse and kids). Chapman’s premise in this book is that we all have a primary love language that speaks love to us. We tend to show love to others in the way that WE like to receive love… not necessarily the way that THEY receive love. So to show love to the ones you care about, you need to know what their love language is.
Let’s explore the 5 Love Languages, and how they might relate to your Mother. Afterall, if you’re looking for something creative and unique to give to Mom, whether it’s something that you didn’t have to spend a dime on, or you spent a fortune on, wouldn’t you love for it to be the ultimate thing that speaks love to your Mom?
The five love languages are: Words of Affirmation, Quality Time, Receiving Gifts, Acts of Service, Physical Touch. Which one is your Mom’s love language?
1. Words of Affirmation. If your Mom cries over a sappy, heart felt card, and could care less about a gift… you don’t need to spend a ton of money on a gift if what speaks to her is words of affirmation! We sometimes take Moms for granted and don’t verbally express our gratitude. Well, if words of affirmation is her love language, then here is a perfect time to put pen to paper. If you’re creative… write her a poem, or just a heartfelt letter about how much you appreciate her. If you’re feeling crafty, print it out on nice paper and put it in a nice frame. This is something that she would treasure for life! If you have a video camera, record each member of the family expressing their appreciation for Mom. Put it up on YouTube.com and show the world what a star your Mom is!
If you’re not the creative writer type, you could buy a book of poems about mothers and inscribe the first page with your own personal note… maybe pointing out the poems that you think describe your Mom the best. Better yet… glue some pictures of Mom and you onto the pages of your favorite poems. Mom would enjoy the surprise as she’s reading the poems.
You can easily make a homemade card for free at home if you use this free card maker software. You can add your own pictures and text, and print them on your printer.
2. Quality Time. If your Mom just loves spending time with you over all the other love languages, then why not give her your time? If you don’t live nearby, can you book a trip to visit her? If you are nearby, can you carve out the entire day for her? Think about what she would enjoy doing with you that she doesn’t normally get to do. It could be a picnic, a hike, a brunch, the theatre, a museum, or just a long car ride to one of her favorite locales where you could spend quality time together.
3. Receiving Gifts. If your Mom’s love language is receiving gifts, then you really should give her a gift! But it doesn’t have to be something you spent a lot of money on. You could take some pictures of the family and put them in a frame or scrapbook. If you have the money, you could buy her one of those digital picture frames that rotates the pictures of the family you store in there for her. You could always get her a bouquet of flowers … but why not get a plant that will last (unless she has a black thumb like me), like .
If your mom likes to read, the hottest trend is the Kindle2 which is a digital device that you can download (without a PC), store and read up to 1500 book titles (newspapers and magazines too). Oprah has called this one of her favorite things. It’s not exactly cheap, but the price to download the books is cheaper than buying the hardcopy, and they don’t take up shelf space. This gift is guaranteed to knock your Mom’s socks off if she likes to read.
The point is to give her something heartfelt (this isn’t the time to buy a vacuum cleaner).
4. Acts of Service. If your Mom’s primary language is receiving acts of service, then you’ll want to DO something for her. This is the easiest thing to do that won’t necessarily cost you anything. Think about a chore that she’s normally responsible for and give her a respite from it … maybe a week off of housework while everyone else does it (or hire a maid for a deep clean), washing her car for a month, cooking dinner for a week, or doing the wash for a month. Have everyone in the family pitch in and take over a chore (but make sure everyone follows through on it). On Mother’s Day, give her a card with a coupon for the service done for her. If this is her love language, she will be delighted! If you want to be extravagant, how about hiring a chef to come in and cook the family a gourmet meal.
5. Physical Touch. If touch speaks love to your Mom, how about treating her to a massage, or manicure, or pedicure, or entire spa day? If you can’t afford that, how about a coupon for 100 hugs from the kids (and a separate, more intimate coupon from Dad to Mom).
In conclusion, if you’d like to wow Mom with a heartfelt gift this year, I recommend focusing in on what speaks love to her heart. If you start with her primary love language, it should be easy to come up with a Mothers Day present that will be meaningful to her for the rest of her life.
